Jun 11, 2018 · Arts and Crafts Movement Late 19th- and early 20th-century British movement, led by artists who wanted to revitalize the decorative arts by returning to the ideals of medieval craftsmanship. Inspired by William Morris, the movement contributed to European art nouveau, but was eventually transformed by the acceptance of modern industrial methods.
Trained as an architect, Arthur Stansfield Dixon was a friend of William Morris and Charles Robert Ashbee, and also knew Philip Webb, the Arts and Craft Movement's leading architect. Dixon designed a number of pioneering Arts and Crafts-style buildings in Birmingham, and also developed a reputation for designing objects in metal.The Arts and Crafts movement was one of the few international trends to have originated in the British Isles, and the private house lay at its heart.
